Golf Etiquette in Dubai: What Clubs Actually Expect

Dubai golf clubs are internationally minded and genuinely welcoming, but they hold a clear standard. Almost every awkward moment a visitor experiences comes from one of five things.

1. Dress code

• Collared shirt or a golf-specific mock neck. Tucked in at most clubs.
• Tailored shorts or trousers. No denim, no gym shorts, no cargo pockets.
• Soft spikes only. Trainers are accepted at some clubs, running shoes rarely.
• Shorts should sit at or near the knee; ankle socks are fine with shorts.

2. Pace of play

Four hours fifteen is the standard expectation and marshals enforce it. Ready golf is encouraged nearly everywhere. If the group behind is waiting on every shot, wave them through — it is normal here and nobody takes offence.

3. Caddies

Caddies are common and often extremely good on local greens. A tip of AED 50–100 above the caddie fee is customary for good service. Treat them as a resource: on unfamiliar Bermuda greens, a caddie's read is worth more than your rangefinder.

4. Course care in heat

• Repair pitch marks properly — push in from the edges, never lever the centre up
• Rake bunkers thoroughly; desert sand shows every footprint
• Observe cart-path-only signage, especially after overseeding
• Replace divots or use the seed mix provided on the cart

5. Cultural courtesy

During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking visibly on the course outside designated areas, and expect adjusted tee times and clubhouse hours. Clubs will tell you the specifics when you book — asking the question is itself well received.
