How to start playing golf in Dubai
The honest version of the journey from never having held a club to feeling comfortable playing a golf course in Dubai — in ten steps.
- 01
Start with a golf lesson
Golf punishes guesswork. An hour with a golf coach at the very beginning sets your grip, posture and alignment correctly — the three things almost every self-taught beginner has to unlearn later. Starting with an instructor saves months of frustration and bad habits that get expensive to fix.
- 02
You don't need to buy everything immediately
Most ranges and clubs in Dubai rent clubs, and many coaches bring a set you can borrow for your first lessons. Play a handful of sessions first, work out whether you enjoy it and what suits your swing, then buy. A half set plus a putter is plenty to begin with.
- 03
Learn at the driving range
The range is where the repetitions happen. You buy a basket of balls, take a bay, and work through clubs from wedge to driver. Hit fewer balls with more intent than a hundred rushed swings — and in Dubai, book early morning or evening bays during the warmer months.
- 04
Learn putting and the short game
Well over half your shots in a round happen within 100 metres of the hole. Chipping, pitching, bunker play and putting are where a beginner's score drops fastest, and they are far less physically demanding to practise than full swings.
- 05
Learn basic golf etiquette
Keep up with the group ahead, never swing or hit when anyone is in range, repair your pitch marks on the green, rake bunkers behind you, stay quiet and still while others play, and let faster groups through. Good etiquette matters more to golfers than a good score.
- 06
Understand handicap
A handicap is a number that reflects your scoring ability so players of different standards can compete fairly. You establish one by submitting a set of scores, and it moves as you improve. Lower is better. Many UAE clubs and competitions ask for one, so it is worth starting early.
- 07
Understand course access in Dubai
Requirements differ from club to club. Some courses are happy to welcome newcomers, others ask for a certified handicap or proof of competence, and dress codes and tee-time rules vary. Always check the individual course's requirements before booking your first round.
- 08
Play your first holes
Do not make a championship layout your first experience. Start with on-course coaching, a short course, an academy layout or a quiet twilight nine. Playing a few holes with a coach beside you turns range practice into actual golf far faster than going out alone.
- 09
Find the right golf coach
Coaches specialise. Some are brilliant with complete beginners, others are technical performance coaches, others focus on juniors or the short game. Pick based on your goals, level and preferred location rather than whoever has the next free slot.
- 10
Play regularly
Consistency beats intensity. A recurring lesson, a weekly range session and a round every couple of weeks will improve you far more than an occasional burst of activity. The players who progress fastest keep all three going at once.
