Dubai has roughly a dozen full-length golf courses inside an hour's drive, and they are not interchangeable. One is a tournament venue with a skyline behind the 18th green, another is a mangrove links in Ajman where you play alongside flamingos, and a third is a Gil Hanse design that asks you to think about angles for the first time in your life. Picking the wrong one for your game — or your budget — is the difference between a great trip and an expensive walk.

What makes it good golf rather than just a good day out is the par 5s. Each one offers a genuine decision. The 18th is the famous one — water down the left, tiered green, clubhouse balcony full of people watching you make a mess of a lay-up. Play it once and you understand why the tournament has kept the same finishing hole for nearly four decades.

Gil Hanse — the architect behind the Rio Olympic course and the Oakmont restoration — built the most architecturally interesting layout in the emirate. Instead of forced carries over water, you get ground contour, angled greens and bunkering that punishes the lazy line rather than the short hitter. Higher handicaps score better here than they expect. Good players find it fascinating.

4. Yas Links, Abu Dhabi

It is a 90-minute drive from Dubai Marina and it is worth every minute. Kyle Phillips built a genuine seaside links on the Gulf, with firm turf, run-offs and coastal wind that changes your club selection between the tee and the fairway. It is regularly rated the best course in the Middle East, and it earns that.

5. The Els Club Dubai

Ernie Els built big, open, links-inspired golf in Sports City. Fast run-offs mean the bump-and-run finally becomes a real option in Dubai. If your short game is one-dimensional — high flop shots only — this course will find you out and then teach you something.

6. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

The most central championship course in the city, and the best value of the premium set. Tighter than the desert layouts and better suited to a shot-maker than a bomber. The sail-shaped clubhouse is one of the defining pieces of Dubai architecture and the twilight rate is one of the smartest bookings in town.

7. Al Zorah Golf Club, Ajman

A Nicklaus Design layout threading through mangrove channels 45 minutes north of Dubai. It costs roughly half of the marquee courses, it is almost never busy, and the setting is unlike anything else in the country. If you only have budget for two rounds, make one of them this.

8–10. Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills and Jebel Ali

Arabian Ranches is the friendliest desert layout in the city and an ideal first Dubai round. Dubai Hills gives you the Burj Khalifa on the horizon for most of the front nine. Jebel Ali is a short, quirky nine-hole resort course with peacocks — not serious golf, but a genuinely charming late afternoon.

When to play

Summer golf in Dubai is genuinely possible if you tee off at 5:30 am, take a cart, and treat hydration as equipment rather than an afterthought. Two litres of water plus electrolytes for eighteen holes is the baseline, not the maximum.
