Beginner's Guide to Golf in Dubai
Where to learn, what it costs, which courses forgive a new golfer, and how to get from first lesson to first eighteen holes in one season.

Dubai is one of the best cities in the world to take up golf. Coaching quality is unusually high, the weather is reliable for seven months of the year, and there are enough academy and nine-hole courses that you never need to embarrass yourself on a championship layout before you are ready.
Month one: lessons before equipment
Buy lessons first, clubs second. A block of five or six lessons with a PGA professional costs less than a mid-range driver and will do far more for you. Every major club runs an academy, and several house internationally recognised coaching schools.
Month two: the right starter set
- Driver, 5-wood or hybrid, 7-iron, 9-iron, pitching wedge, sand wedge, putter — that is enough
- Buy a used premium set over a new budget set if the choice is between them
- Get grips checked. In Dubai heat, worn grips are the most common hidden cause of bad shots
- Buy a rangefinder later, not now
Month three: first nine holes
Start on a nine-hole or academy course at twilight when the course is quiet. Play from the forward tees, pick up after double bogey, and focus entirely on pace of play rather than score. Nobody minds a beginner who keeps moving.
Month four to six: first full round and a handicap
Arabian Ranches, Al Badia and the Els Club are forgiving first championship rounds. Once you can complete eighteen holes without losing a dozen balls, register for a handicap through a club or the national federation — it changes how you practise, because progress becomes measurable.
The summer trap
Many beginners start in October, improve fast, then stop entirely in June and lose it all. Two twenty-minute indoor sessions a week through summer holds everything you built.
