Jumeirah Golf Estates Review: Earth and Fire

Jumeirah Golf Estates is where the DP World Tour crowns its season. That gives Earth a specific character: it is built to identify the best player in a field of 50, and it does that job with width off the tee and severity around the greens.

Earth

Greg Norman routed Earth through mature trees rather than desert scrub, which makes it feel more like a European parkland course than anything else in the UAE. Fairways are broad. The trouble starts when you approach from the wrong side.

Green complexes are the story. They are large, tiered and defended by deep bunkering, and the correct angle of attack changes with pin position more than on any other Dubai course. A 40-metre miss into the correct quadrant beats a 15-metre miss into the wrong one.

The closing stretch

Holes 16, 17 and 18 are why the season finishes here. The 18th is a genuine risk-reward par 5 with water guarding the green — the shot that has decided multiple Race to Dubai titles. Standing on that tee on a quiet Tuesday morning is worth the green fee on its own.

Fire

The second course is more open, more desert in character and considerably more forgiving. It is the better round for a mixed-ability group, and it is frequently available when Earth is not. Do not treat it as a consolation prize — it is a very good golf course that happens to sit next to a great one.

Practicalities

• 30–40 minutes from Downtown Dubai, longer in evening traffic
• Earth closes to visitors during DP World Tour Championship build-up in November
• Excellent practice facility and academy
• Standard club dress code, soft spikes required

Verdict

Earth is the most complete championship test in Dubai and Fire is the most under-rated round in the emirate. If you can only play one course in the city and you want to be genuinely tested, this is it. If you want the iconic photograph, the Majlis still wins.
